You know why I'm here. You know what I've been doing...why I want to bounce my head off my laptop night after night. You know because you were once looking for the same thing. It's the question that drives us. It's the question that brought me here, and brought us all here. You once asked the question, just like I do now.
What are masks and how do they work?

In essence I'm fairly hopeless at Photoshop, very needy, often forget to say 'thanks', and often ask the same question over and over again.
So if this site was crying out for a malingering Photoshopping halfwit, your prayers are answered.
I am the one.

...Snoscar.

Sorry Snoscar, but you don't have that distinction. We can add you to the list, but you have to line up behind me. However, you will be forgiven for everything (especially if you can remember to say thanks, lol). I hope that's OK with you, so put away the cat o' nine tails!

So, welcome to the forum and finding out what masks are all about, and then you can go on to the next thousand things there are to learn!

Coolaboola, I'm trying to suss masks out now.
I tend to make layers and eraser them out because I can't work out masks, although I have tried, lord knows I've tried.
Cheers for the heads up, much obliged.

apply a layer mask select your paint brush paint in black to hide the content paint in white to reveal content Looks like clare has updated her link to a tutorial.

Once you get familiarized with the mask, you'll never go back

It is much easier, more efficient and non-destructive. Sometimes I use it like an eraser; painting out at low opacity, then painting back in with low opacity till I get the right mix. You'll see!

dumb I know (see what I told you) but I tend to forget I can't link others to my search. Anyway, I edited that post, so I hope you see that I provided a link to a good tutorial.
