alpha-levels of pixels in separate layer from PNG image

Hi,

I have a PNG image and like to edit the alpha mask. As there's no separate alpha layer inside the PNG image, but all pixels have a certain alpha value, I'd like to extract that with Photoshop. How can I do that?

I'm not sure if this is what you mean. Is the png partially transparent? If so, simply ctrl-click on the layer.
If you mean how to select the luminosity of the layer, simply press ctrl-alt-~.

Hi parabola,

The CTRL way of selection worked, so this is my alpha channel.

How do I reset the alpha channel of the original image though? I mean, if I place it on a white layer and flatten the image, I don't obtain the original colors, but instead get the colors according to their alpha level.

(I.e. 50% opacity black merged on white results in gray. I'd like to have that black, though)
