Aligning Text in Photoshop

Heyy
I'm having trouble trying to align the text in photoshop "align" won't light up, what should i do so it will? i know how to get it in the middle once it lets me click align, i'm doing web design and i'm hopeless with photoshop. And for some reason it won't let me add an attachment, so frustrating....I would attach a photo but the dimensions are to big and resizing it makes it impossible to understand.

To align a text(or whatever) layer, photoshop needs to know what to align with what.
So, you must select (at least) two layers, by clicking on each one with ctrl key pressed.
... and don't forget to select the move tool (v).
