AI Enhancing

Hello everyone,
Has anyone tried using AI-based tools for automatically enhancing scanned slides or removing dust and scratches? I’m curious about their effectiveness.

Regards,
Sopidy.

Hi @spoidyjan
So far, with software post-processing after scanning, I have not seen any AI that reliably removes the dust and scratches and leaves all the detail you want to keep. So, if you don't care about some further information being improperly recognized and removed, you could be good. It would be good to know more specifics about your needs. If you are talking hundreds or thousands of generic family pictures, losing some detail may be a good tradeoff for the gain in productivity. Suppose you are looking for keeper images and not losing any detail. In that case, the AI tools are productivity enhancers that need manual adjustments to dial in the removal of dust and scratches detail.

Suppose you still need to do the scanning. In that case, some scanners and scanning software have an IR channel on top of RGB channel recognition, which is pretty good at differentiating dust and scratches, not in the emulsion where the image detail lies. That can be a step up from the AI software. The only problem that I see in that approach is that I usually only like to scan once, and if the automation gets an image wrong, I have to go back and find that slide and rescan without auto dust and scratch recognition and repair.

Just my experience, of course, and other forum members may have different experiences.

Thanks for the helpful response. I’ll look into the IR channel on scanners for more accuracy. Appreciate the advice
