I hope I am posting in the correct thread, if not I apologize as I am new here.

I need advice, I am so confused. First let me say I have never used PS, I have it, but not used as of yet. I know Paintshop Pro and wanted a tablet to be more creative. I was told about Bamboo and Intuos.

Since I will not be able to upgrade later on, I decided to save and buy the intuos4 medium size tablet. I was told it is not for PSP, but for Painter 11 and P.S.

Here is my problem. I only have 2 weeks left to return the tablet if I change my mind or cant figure it out. I enjoy oil painting in r/l, but wanted to do this digital as well, also wanted to learn to draw and create my own art.

many forums I have read for other people, suggest a cheaper tablet and upgrading later on. Since this will not be an option for me, I am wondering if I should keep this Intuos4 or save money to buy the Clintiq?

Reason I ask this, I was told the Clintiq tablet, you can see the image on the tablet as you work? Intuos does not have this. I played with it a few hours, could draw a few (childish) looking objects and did create a painting that looked like a kids attempt at painting. The hand to eye seems difficult for me. Of course I only played a bit and have not even figured out all the buttons on the tablet.

All this was done in Painter11, and it was my first time using that program as well.
In time, I will learn Painter, PS and hopefully other Adobe software. But for now I am overwhelmed and have to make a decision on the Intuos tablet soon.

I know I do not want to downgrade to the Bamboo, but should I wait till I could get the Clintiq or just stay with Intuos? From reading on the web, PS talks a lot about photographs. Although that would be nice to learn, I am more interested in creating my own art, drawing, oil painting etc. Although I am no professional, so far its all a hobby.

This was a big expense for me, the tablet and programs. I know the Intuos is over kill for a total newbie, but in time I will master this, will I need something more advanced later on?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. It will help me to decide on keeping the tablet I have or returning and buying a better one at a later time.

Sorry for the long post. I dont know how many newbies are here. Wanted to be sure before anyone replied, they understood I cant work the tablet or the Program well.

Thanks for reading my SOS :bustagut:

well... if $350 was steep for you... $999, and $1999... I think would be out-of-the-question...

retouching on a Cintiq... is a pure Joy... but, I own the same Intuos as you...
I am not a painter/artist... a photographer/custom printer, so a Cintiq would be over-kill for me...
I do my own work, so production times, are not an issue...
I use a smaller section/mapping... so the hand-eye thing is reduced greatly...

if... I was doing production work, on a daily basis, and time was money... the Cintiq would be justified...

I have a close friend, who is an artist/painter... their words...
"If... you cannot draw with your eyes closed, and only from your mind, you are truly not an artist"

I can visualize running horses in my mind, yet... only stick figures come to my hands... wink/smile...
yes... the Gods intended me to be a photographer...

Sarah, I have the intuos4 too.
I'm a amateur photographer and this more than satisfies my needs.

I don't think you should downgrade to the Bamboo but only you know if you need the Cintiq.
If you have use of an intuis4 for the next 2 weeks I suggest you spend a lot of time with it and see if it suits your needs.

What version of PS do you have?
Right now I'm going to assume you have CS5 and I want to make you aware of the new paint brushes.

A larger tablet is not necessarily better. Unless you like to make really broad gestures, I would suggest a smaller tablet suits you find. I have a Graphire (they were the cheap range before Bamboo) and an Intuous 3, both in the smallest size. I love them both (in some ways, I prefer the Graphire).

Everyone who has a Cintiq raves about it -- but, ye gods, the price!
