Adjustment Brush not "activating"

I was using it fine yesterday. I just downloaded the program, trial version. When I highlight the selected area that I would like to touch up, and move my slider, the WHOLE photo gets changed. The button for the adjustment brush is highlighted and the flow and density are on full strength,(100). Please help as I am most frustrated at this point.
 
Your question is very vague.you highlighted the area I presume with the marching ants selection, what slider are you referring to?
 
It would probably help to you know I'm talking about lightroom 4.4. Screen shot wouldn't help. Adjustments made with brush are not localized to the brush stroke...they are global
