Adding a Date to a Photo

I have quite a lot of photos, some of which are over 100 years old. I scanned them into my Windows 10 computer over the years. None of them have the date as part of the photo so I would like to add a date to them. I've come up with some general steps but have not tried it yet. Would something like this work?
  1. Open PS and add a text layer.
  2. Add a photo to the file.
  3. Save the file.
  4. Reopen the file and change the photo to another one.
  5. Change the Date text if necessary.
  6. Etc.
BTW I'm using Photoshop 7, an app that I used at my job for over 15 years. Not having any programming experience, and having nothing but time since I'm retired, I would appreciate any comments

I moved this thread to the Automation and scripting forum because I think that's the better way to go for this task. Unfortunately, I'm not the one to walk you through this. But you should be able to have an action or a script that will allow you to open images from a file, add the proper date, and save.

I'm certain one of our more knowledgeable members in automation will step up to help you out.

That's okay. After working with the problem awhile I found a simple way to do what I want.
Thank you for telling me about the move!

I am still having the problem. I moved some of the files that were giving me problems to a Windows Vista computer. No matter which format I choose to save the file, I get the same problem.
I also cleared out my temp folders to no avail.

Specific information is needed, are all the dates the same, do the dates come from file metadata such as date created etc? What font, colour, size, location etc.

Although this can be scripted in Photoshop, most people writing scripts are using current versions and things may not work in such an old version of Photoshop.

With this in mind, it would be best if you can control the process using a GUI tool, such as:

Thank you for replying.
I gave up using Photoshop to add dates (although I can do it) because of the problem I have with saving the file once I have opened it in Photoshop. I am now using Snagit because I can add a date to my photos and then move it around the photo at will. I have 400-500 personal photos, and over the last few years I added date that the photo was taken to the filenames .
