I have a paragraph and there are certain words In the paragraph I want to "stress" and add a emboss and dropshadow effect too. However, the whole paragraph is in one layer and the blending options apply to the whole layer. Is there an easy way to add effects to certain words in the paragraph instead of putting every word in a different layer and then trying to move them accordingly so they seem to match up?

Put the layer styles on their own layers then use a layer mask to remove the style in the areas you want. Layers-Layer Styles-Create Layers.
