Action Inaction

I make proof books using Blurb but when I do I have to resize every photo to prevent the rectangular images from being cropped. Blurb's rather clunky 'BookSmart' software cannot automate this and so I'd like to run a Photoshop action (with a Droplet for ease of use) to make each image square -without cropping the subjects out, naturally.
So far all of my attempts to a. create and action that can correctly center each (vertical and horizontal) image, and b. create a droplet that actually saves and closes each image have resulted in failure and frustration.
No matter what I do I can't get past the save dialog box, nor can I figure out how to make a rectangular image square.
Help!!

Photoshop is not able to see where the image needs to be cropped to retain the subject. Maybe someday, but not currently. For now, that's something you'll need to do manually.
