Hi Polly,

In looking at your screenshot, it looks like the character may already be on his own layer. If that's the case, just click in the body of the layer to highlight the layer and add an adjustment layer or just adjust it. Select IMAGE > ADJUSTMENTS > choose whatever adjustment you want to make.

If it was not on it's own layer you would have to isolate the character from his background and place him on his own layer. Having stated this, an easy way, but less precise, would be to use the QUICK SELECTION TOOL and make a general selection around the character and then apply the adjustment.

A cheaper method, so to speak, is to use a layer adjustment. Go to layer>new adjustment level> then choose contrast, levels, etc. Once you apply the adjustment you want, take a soft black brush and remove the adjustment around the character, then use the brush, less soft, more opaque, and do the rest of the BG.

Selecting the figure is the best option but may be well beyond your skills at this point. But you can always try. If you use the quick selection, zoom in and check the borders. Use the shift or the alt/opt key to adjust the edges, then you can use the selection>refine edge window. I guess you'll just have to experiment with the results.
