I am a newbie and i confess here that i am yet to learn a lot to retouch the old photos.I got this old photo of my mom and thought to restore it.Tried clone and heal brushes in photoshop. The main idea is that ,my mom who is totally unaware of this modern technology ,would be so amazed and happy to see her restored old photo. But due to the lack of photoshop skills ,i couldn't do much better:frown:.
i would love your guidance and if someone can help me produce a better version(even colorized).i shall be highly grateful:)
regards...the 2nd one is "before version"

Looks like your on the right track.

You need to take just the right clone sample and position the tool at the right place so you can get a clean continuity on the background drapes.

Others may offer more help on this. Just come back now and then to check. And if your still at it, post your new edits.

I don't know if you should start again or not

but don't work on the original layer
create a new blank layer and select "from all layers" under "sample"
in your clone (or healing) brush tool

that way whatever changes you make are in that new (blank) layer
so if you make a mistake you can just erase that area and not start from scratch.

Also make sure you're using a small (soft) brush. Using a brush that's too big wil cover more of the area than you want. I recommend (for the clone tool) to use brush with around 80 to 85% hardness. Don't make it too soft, you'll get blurry edges.

thank u so much guys ....your guidance is really helpful.being a newbie i am yet to figure out how to use different tools but what u have suggested is enough to make me contented :)

clone stamp it.
if you meant the stains on the textured cloth use small stamp and 100% opacity.
pay some atention on the nose part i think you need some shadowing in order not to look flat.
after you're done go image desaturate and then bring aged look back using ctrl+B and plying with it.

aww..thank u so much ..u must b a professional editor so u could manage to produce a good result in no tym ...bravo :)

a different project though but i thought not to start a new thread to save the space of site ..not that much content .the original foto was badly damaged ..

away too posterized, you should try to keep original content, not to blur it. if you're having the other photos of the same person, even from different period of life you may use such parts as mouth or eyes in order to replace original destroyed. but here you need to downgrade its quality to make it match.

Here is my go. Please let me know if you are satisfied and I will make the colored version too.
