Hello,

I have 72dpi image at 18in. I need to go to print. Should I resize to 300dpi at around 4in or just scale down the image? It will go on a business card so I really have enough pixels because it's not very big, just not sure best resize method.

Thanks!
David

I would see what the image looks like. If necessary, recreate it at 300dpi. If it is mainly vector, it should be OK to change dpi and image size. The printer I use for cards wants 350dpi. Go figure.

only 72, your looking for miracles my friend we can not say for sure without seeing details(in image) involved, most of that size need some serious work to get ready for print, if not all.

If it's 18 inches and you're going to use it on a business card, go to Image-Image Size uncheck Image Resample and then resize it for the card. Your resolution will likely increase to more than 300 PPI.

I know it's a bit dicy. I'm doing screen grabs from a custom program that generates graphics written in the Processing language. Because I have to use this method I've been doing grabs anywhere from 1300px up to 10000px.

Is there a difference between scaling the image down and setting it to 300dpi and bring the image size down? Since the pixel densities should be right for print, won't it work? Or is there still some kind of funny interpolation or artifacting that happens in the translation?

By the way, you can see examples of what I'm working with here: davidcool.com/projects/harmonograph-2-0/

Thanks for all the responses!

If it's a large image at 72ppi, open Image/Size , uncheck Resample and Enter 300 as the ppi. You will then see what size it is at 300. It should not be a problem going as small as you will be for a business card. As long as your going down in size you'll be fine. You can then resize it or resample to what you need.

Yup what he said! :bustagut:

That's true also.

Aunty, if it's a vector it's resolution independent as far manipulating it's size. If it's a vector, you can make it as big as a bill board without losing quality or vice versa for that matter.

I knew that but I couldn't help myself ! You are forgiven .
That's what I meant. If it's a vector, no problem. Sorry if the way I wrote it was confusing.
