3D effect using 2D in photoshop

How to create this 3D effect (Front/top view only as shown in the image)

Hey. This is a much more difficult and involved effect that would be very demanding and laborious to explain!

I made a quick attempt at the effect and discovered it was more of a challenge than I expected.



The best I can offer for now is a text cutout demo.
I know there are many ways to accomplish this type of "cut out" effect, but after experimentation, I found this was the better way (for me) to do this effect for the example you provided.

Cover up rectangle layer.


Solid rectangle layer.


Orange rectangle layer.


A layer mask on the solid rectangle layer with the number 12.


A bevel and emboss layer style on the solid rectangle layer.
Note: The bevel and emboss is also on the outside of the layer......


....so we need the cover up layer to hide it! (This is optional!)


Now we need a drop shadow.
We cant use the drop shadow in the layer style because we cant hide the outer edge drop shadow.


So we create a black layer with the 12 cut out of it.


Move into position. Reduce it's opacity.
Note: The outer edge drop shadow....


....this time we can hide the outer edge drop shadow with a layer mask.
Convert to a SO and add a Gaussian blur SF.


That's about it.

As I stated above, the overall 3D effect of the watch face is far too difficult to explain which is why it's missing. This would have to be broken down in multiple extensive stages of creation to be explained. But I have explained how to create the cutout effect which is a major component of the 3D effect.

Even if you are referring to this image as "missing". This perspective would have to be drawn/created from scratch and would be even more difficult to explain than the request above.

If you refer the attached image, i have highlighted in red colour where the slope starts from the top to the bottom. whether this effect excluding the cutouts can be achieved through layer style - bevel, etc., options

In the perspective that you have shown in post #8, this can not be done with a layer style exclusivly. You can use a layer style, but this perspective would have to be drawn/created from scratch.


In the perspective of post #1, yes this can be done (to some degree) with a layer style. But it to needs to be drawn.

I am sorry, i couldn't able to explain properly. What i want is, the one which you have drawn in image 1, whether it can be achieved through layer style if the same effect continues throughout the circle. Hope am making you understand my language

The effect can not be accomplished with a layer style only. It could be used for some parts. The same layer style would also have to be altered as the perspective would change as you continue throughout the circle.

Hi all. I would like to know how do you build your watch faces. What Programs are you using beside the Facer Creator? I personally create the base construction mostly with AutoCad (2d and 3d). Finetuning, Animation- and Light-Effects are afterwards made with Photoshop. Greetings...

I didn't say that drawing the watch faces was difficult..................I said trying to explain how it is done would be very difficult!!

I'm not sure what everyone is using, but the drawing can easily be done with Photoshop.

They draw/create them. The effect you highlighted would be a very complicated process but fairly simple to create...............but very difficult to explain in steps.

It would be based off of concentric rings. (This was done very quickly, so it's not perfect.......just an example!)





Then masking, creating the edges and so on.

LOL!! In examining the watch image, I already see a better and more practical way to create the effect! It's still based on concentric rings though!
