100% opaque brush from colour image?

Hi all,

Just found this cool forum and this is my first post...

I want to create a top down view image of a pile of autumn leaves.
Something like the attached image.

So my idea is to have an isolated image of a single leaf, create a brush from it, set the brush dynamics to create a random scatter and size of leaves and paint this on a few separate layers to create the impression the leaves are on top of each other.

The problem is since the singe leaf is colour and not a simple 100% black silhouette, the resulting brush is transparent. So this is no good for what I need.

Is there a way to create a brush (or some other technique) so I can simply move the mouse across the screen and it will paste full colour / 100% opaque copies of the isolated leaf with brush dynamics to create random sized / angled copies of the leaf?

Or is the only way to achieve what I need going to involve making manual copies of the leaf which would take a long time?

Thanks for your help!

The straight way is to use Symbol Sprayer tools in Adobe Illustator.

But you can use Clone Stamp tool in PS to have the same effect albeit not so easy:cheesygrin:.

Create an image of a single leaf on a transparent background. Add some drop shadow style. Now add new layer to it, fill it with black and define the brush. Turn the black layer off. Select the leaf layer.

Grab Clone Stamp tool, choose that brush, uncheck Aligned option, Select Sample option to All Layers. Position the brush over your leaf layer and Alt-click. Open Clone Source panel, set Show Overlay.
Now go to your main image, create new layer and start single clicking on it, placing leaves wherever you want. But it can be only one leaf at a click, it won't make many leaves with one long stroke. But still you can scale and rotate the sample in the Clone Source panel. And you can add four more samples to add other types of leaves.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I've not used the clone tool much, in fact I'd forgotten it was there.
I've had a quick play with it - with a bit of practice I should get the look I'm after.

Thanks again :)

I just did this with the one leaf from your picture made a new brush from it then played around. Not brilliant but shows that it can be done with time and patience:)
P.S I warped a few leaves for realism
