Help With Borders?

So I have someone who needs some images resized, and wants a 4px border added. He wants the images to be 100x72. So, I make the image 96x68, and then I increase the canvas size to 100x72.

Now I'm not a full on photoshop expert, but to me that would seem like by doing what I did above, would create a 4px border. He's telling me that the border is 2px after I finished it. Could use some advice. Thanks guys.

When someone says, "a 4 px border", I think most people interpret that to mean 4px on all sides. In contrast, the procedure you described will give you only 2 px on any one side (ie, 4 px total on opposite pairs of sides).

Ah I see, so what can I do to make it 4px on all sides? Shrink the image down to 92x64 and then increase canvas to 100x72?
