Hi,
Ive never used photoshop or any other graphics program but am an architect and autocad user, wanting to create my own company's 2 page, 11 x 17 company brochure rather than go to a printer and get overcharged for something I can do.
How long will it take me to learn enough about Photoshop to do that?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much.

Why would you want to use Photoshop necessarily? For that type of work, you would be better served with Adobe Illustrator IMHO. If your an Autocad user, you could probably pick up AI pretty quick. I just finished creating a brochure and I did all the layout work in AI, but I did export to Photoshop to finish as I needed to edit some of my bitmap content. Photoshop is wonderful and just unbeatable for some purposes but being bitmap based is not the answer to all projects. If you have both, they interface so well it makes working in both really nice. I subscribe to Adobe's Creative Cloud and have access to every software program they sell for a small monthly fee. Photoshop's main purpose in life is a bitmap editor where AI is a vector creation program.

ALB,
I have been wanting to learn photoshop anyway because as an architect I have a need to colorize some of the drawings I do. The only reason I'm thinking photoshop for that is because I've read that other architects are using it for that purpose. That adobe creative cloud may be a good way for me. I'm not sure which Photoshop version to get.
thanks for the great feedback.

New Adobe products can only be acquired via the Cloud now. They no longer sell it as boxed software.
The learning curve for what you want to do initially would be pretty short, but PS is a very very big program with lots of different uses and capabilities. I personally have studied it intensely for about a year and I learn something new about it almost every day. This forum is a tremendous resource with some very talented people as members, so hang around.

My intention is, and Ive only made assumptions, is to import autocad dwg files and/or pdf files of floor plans and Elevations that are drafted in autocad and Sketchup as well as pdf files of black and white drawings that are done with pencil then scanned to pdf into PS(or AI) then colorize and enhance. PS is a lot more than what I need I hope I learn just some basics to do this. ALso want to create a simply 11x17 company brochure for marketing.
Thanks

What you describe is certainly do-able with PDF being the way to go. The PDF (Portable Document Format) is an Adobe product and interfaces with both Photoshop and AI.
I used an online "school" to learn AI recently. For a paltry $25.00 you can get a month to month membership at Infinite Skills. They have a lot of programs that they teach and for what your wanting to do would be good. For that monthly fee you have access to all of the content. It is presented very well and there are two courses on Photoshop there. Just Google Infinite Skills.
