Hi everyone -

This is a companion thread that I'm opening for discussion of the images in the 1st NO WORDS thread, or to discuss anything else related to these new threads.

For those who are interested, the high key photo that I posted was taken with a Nikon d700 and 105mm / 2.8 VR macro lens. It was taken outdoors in open shade, and then converted to a high-key look in Photoshop. It's the mother of a close family friend.

Cheers,

Tom

My picture was taken several years ago, and now Pig the cat is older still! She is 13 years old and still cute as a button. I used the lighting from a near by window and took the picture with a Nikon D40.

Great shot, Jessica. You must have read my mind because I was debating whether or not to use the shot I did, or use one of our recently deceased 20 y.o. cats.

Thanks for posting.

I shot this in April 2006.
I do some street and candid photography but this guy is still my all time favorite.
The original print was less contrasty with a sepia tint but I redid it to post here, I wanted to try get a more Dragan B&W look.

Shot this last year on a side trip during my daughters graduation from college. This was my first outing with my Pentax K2000 shooting in RAW. Cannot remember particulars, but I had no light, and most fun shooting with a camera for the first time !!

Shot 200 images, some great...many deleted:mrgreen:

I don't know if this old a photo is allowed here. I took it in 1977, touched up today. Taken with a Pentax ES II SLR, I don't remember settings, film speed 200. Probably should have used 100. I don't remember the smallest f stop, 2.4? Scanned on not the best scanner, HP all in one. The negative is probably in a box of old negatives hidden somewhere in storage. I'm sure it would have been cleaner and sharper if I had the negative to scan, not a print. I think this was in my dark portrait days, but the film was a little thin as I remember.

I inherited the Pentax from my boyfriend when he got his Nikon and Leica. (He went on to become a professional food photographer of all things. I always thought he'd work for some documentary-producing magazine given how he liked to be on the streets shooting.)

Thanks Jessica, you got a great big Awwww from my wife, a cat person.
Our first cat was a calico just like yours.

McGuru, I never thought of old doors or architecture for this post but it's just what Tom asked for,

"Old Timers", however you might interpret that phrase.
Good post.

Clare, what a great "Dad" photo.
Scanned film photos should have been mentioned as welcomed along with cell and P&S images.

@Steve - Great shot! What a character. Do you remember exactly how you got the Dragan / HDR look?

@Mike - Spooky!!! That shot should be in the opening scenes of some fear-factor TV show.

@Clare - That's an absolutely wonderful portrait of your Dad. I love it! To answer your question, of course older images, film-based or otherwise are welcome! As suggested, I'll modify the sticky guidelines to mention that.

re: my "however you might interpret the title" comment -- how different people interpret the "official" subject is a major part of the fun of these threads. When I said, "old timers", I was hoping we would see pictures of everything from old toads and Galapagos turtles to Bristlecone pines to sensitive family portraits to Neanderthal figures in a museum diorama.

Thanks everyone!

Tom

There are two parallel threads with almost the same name:
http://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum/photography/44482-no-words-thread-20130325a-old-timers.html
http://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum...s-thread-20130325b-old-timers-discussion.html

The idea was that one would have the images with almost no text. This is so that it's a purely visual experience / exchange. A pure no-words approach is probably the forum with the most heavy traffic on one of the internet's most active photography sites.

You are currently in the companion thread which is the place for all the chit-chat.

The problem with allowing chit-chat in the main (image) thread is that all the side discussions really dilute the imagery and make it almost impossible to quickly scan through the photos, follow the flow of visual ideas, etc.. However, since you couldn't find the main thread, other people may have the same problem, so we may have to give some thought to this parallel thread approach.

Cheers,

Tom

I looooove that photo you posted. The subject reminds me of Woody Allen and I love me some Woody Allen (:

In a word, No!

Actually I started not with the original but with an already edited version of the image but most of what you see in that image was done by a Nik plugin called Silver Effects Pro.

Tom, for me the problem is the title. At lease on my monitor the full title of the thread is cut off. If you could make "discussion" the third word, instead of that "what the heck is this?" number, and do the same with the image thread, it would be easier to recognize at a glance. I keep opening up both. Even though I could rest my cursor over it and all that or look number of pages . . . Yeah, give me a quick solution, quick view and I'm fat and happy.

I mean just when I go to the what's new page. They appear to be the same thread because the entire title is not visible to me. Except, hmmm, I just went to the new posts section and I can see the whole title . . . When they first appeared, one on top of the other and were in bold type, I could only see to the end of the numbers. Maybe the bold type is what makes the difference. Probably I have a monitor that isn't as wide as many anyway. Your screen capture makes it look like that is the case. Not a big deal.

The second photo was shot at Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine Florida.
St. Augustine is the oldest city in the USA and the fort started construction in 1672, that's old.

Also processed with Silver Effects Pro (one of my favorite PS plug-ins).

My first image is of a tree in the local national park, i just love photographing rough and detailed things.
The second was actually on another tree opposite the first tree, i was just walking around with the kids and wife taking what i see as interesting images, the insect had flown the nest so to speak, that was the pupa that i photographed, no tripod just my big steady hands well almost steady.

Red Beak Stone. Taken in 2008 with a Fuji Finepix e550. No memory of the settings, but probably on automatic and set to Raw. Post processing done completely in Camera Raw. This rock is one of many in the area just adjacent to the Desert Tower on Interstate 8, San Diego County.

Here's a little blip about it: The Depression Era carvings strung along the path are a bonus, hand-carved animals, faces, and folk creatures inspired by the natural shapes in the boulders. Folk artist and out-of-work engineer W.T. Ratcliffe sculpted the quartz granite boulders without any particular theme in mind; but he likely knew kids would love the rocky maze. The carvings and tower are registered as an official California Historical Landmark (#939).

BTW, if you haven't already figured it out, Steve and I agreed to remove the 1 post per person per thread limit to encourage participation, so feel free to add more pix.
