I got onto this kick when I made the fire and ice type effect below for the week 8 challenge and started to talk about how to improve on it. Now I'm stuck on text effects.

I'm still working on techniques. Here are a few I've done:

GREAT!!! I have to try to get those tutorials!! :)

haha I was just playing around with text I made a paper craft looking text quite simple really just clever use of gradient overlays on each letter made it look almost 3dimensional. I like 3 of the 4 you have produced the other 1 is a bit bland but still clever ps the G is not jagged it is the fact it is a gradient converted to web colours

the first one turned out pretty nice I´d say!

fire tutorial was done by me on the weekly challenge thread and I think she made the ice part up as she went along but many tutorials out there check the end of the weekly challenge thread and some people linked iced tutorials I believe

Yes she as hasn't she. Myself i cannot for the life of me get to grips with font.

Do us a SHINY one clare please.

hmmm, OK I'll give that a shot. What ya thinking? Gold, Glass?

I've always like text Belial. Even as a kid, I used to design fonts. But I hadn't pressed my skills or learned the real capabilities of PS re: fonts till I joined PSG. I've learned a lot about techniques and effects from working with the text that can be applied elsewhere.

i like fire & ice alot nice works

Thank you Scoop. I appreciate that.

can you link the tuts u used for the fire and ice.... pah pah pah pleeeezzzz lol

Well, on the fire and ice, the fire tutorial was supplied by Hoogleman on the week 8 challenge. The ice effect I made up... but the ice mounds were actual photos that I manipulated. On the crystal font that was from a text on lynda.com and you have to subscribe. But google will get you a lot of results. This site has a lot of great text effects, but I haven't checked any of them out yet.

Awesome work Clare

You've improved a lot, this is impressive.

I really like it, Please keep it up

Thanks Sir Maximus. Being on this forum has helped me focus, identify where I need help, and given me plenty of chances to have fun in PS and to think about questions when folks want help. Been a good experience.

Maybe do i fire based Belial text thingy for myself please, siggy based...

LOL. This one's as ordered Belial! The entire effect is done with layer fx and filters. That's it. The BG is basically a solid color layer (made smart object which may not be necesssary) with cloud, cloud diff, glass, and rust pattern overlay. The text is altered completely in layer effects.

Ohh i like the background.

I thought you might. I think that's the most interesting part of it. And why I described the steps. Simple, simple, simple.

Do any of the earlier versions of PS have smart objects? I went from PS 6 to CS5 so IDK. I guess one purpose of the smart object with this BG is for changing the cloud effects if you want to do that after you've finished all the steps. However, I tried to make this without using a smart object and I did not get the rich, textured background, but something almost transparent. Maybe if you don't use smart obj. you would choose some photo with high contrasts, deep colors. I'll have to experiment.
