Need help - Burn Text Into Wood?

So I'm getting married in 6 months, and I am working on our "Save the Date" cards... We took some pictures together, and I'm playing around with a couple and have narrowed my picks down to whichever one i can get to look the best.

I'd REALLY like this one to work out, but I can't seem to get the right look I'm after. I've tried several tutorials on the net that show how to achieve the effect, but none are producing that "right result".

I'm trying to put "Save The Date" on the deck above our heads, but I want it to look like it's burned into the deck... The three words need to be on top of each other, and in a handwriting type font. I want it to look like we burnt it into the wood ourselves.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any other tips regarding color correction, details, etc. are more than welcome too!!

Have you tried Deke McClelland's "branding type on a texture" tutorial? It is one of his tuts that you can see without subscribing to lynda.com. It seems like it could work and you could always roughen the edges of the type to look more randomly burned.

I'm surprised with all the burned into wood text tutorials on the web that you couldn't find one. Maybe this will help.

I found several, including Deke's... I just couldn't get them to look right.

I watched this one and it seemed pretty good, but I would alter many of the settings he uses and I'd choose a different font.

If you don't have any luck with your project, maybe I could give it a try. Though of course, I;m not sure what effect you actually want.

I had time to play around with Deke's Branding tutorial. IDK if this is the one you tried. I would definitely use a larger, thicker font for this. The displacement map works really well for this task.

Ok, I think I got a look that I am happy with. I followed the tutorial from Deke, and messed with the settings and feel happy about what I got.

Thanks for the help guys!!
